Rhode Island 70.3
Providence, RI - 7/12/2009
1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run

Fillnow second in Age Group at Rhode Island 70.3

Kelly Fillnow who won her last two half Ironman distance races (Duke Half IM and White Lake Half IM #1) had an excellent day on the course in Providence, RI. On a windy but nice day, Kelly had a strong race and ended as the 10th overall amateur woman and 16th overall woman including the pros. Kelly continues to have a strong season while building for her A race, Ironman Florida in Panama City, Florida in November. Great job Kelly!! Friend of Triple Threat Racing and professional triathlete Nick Frank from Charlotte had a smoking fast day and place 5th Overall on the men's side with a 4:03:12. Awesome job Nick!!
RI 70.3 was a point to point race and a logistical nightmare! Make sure you arrive early enough to set everything up in both transitions. On race day, the race director announced that those too fearful for the ocean swim (due to the inclement weather and massive waves) could forfeit the swim and just do the bike and run. I really freaked out after I heard this. The gargantuan waves inhibited me from even seeing the buoys during the swim, but I somehow managed to make it out alive! The first 15 miles of the bike were awesome. Nice tail wind coasting at 24/25 miles an hour. Then the hills began and so did seeing 9mph!! The last part of the ride was really technical as we headed into Providence. If you do not like to run hills, I would not recommend this course. Mile 2 and 7 (double loop course) made Heartbreak Hill seem like a piece of cake. I headed up the biggest hill of my life, thinking that I was finished, only to realize that I was only half way up the hill. Besides those two torturous miles, the rest of the run was great. My run split was 1:22 off of overall winner & Ironman World Champion Michellie Jones. Really need to work on that swim though :). I finished in 4:48, coming in 2nd place in my age group, 10th non-pro, and 16th overall.
